Home Remodeling Jobs You Should Never Do the DIY Route

The Worst DIY Projects for Your Home

The Internet is chocked full of DIY home remodeling tutorials, however, performing them well is a great deal harder than just watching a YouTube video and following it.

Often, even the simplest of projects that first appear like quick fixes can wind up in disaster if the person doesn’t have the permits, materials, or experience that is needed to get the job done correctly.

Installing a bathroom in the basement

Most DIY plumbing projects end up one big mess. Not only are they physically dangerous for homeowners, but they can also cost big money if they have to call in a professional to rectify the problems they did in the first place. Among some of the bad plumbing ideas, attempting to install a new bathroom in a basement is especially bad for homes, and homeowners’ bank balances.

Painting

Most homeowners think they will save money by painting both the interior and exterior of their homes themselves. After all, all it takes is a quick trip to the hardware store and a few hours of making brush strokes, right?

Wrong, a bad paint job does have consequences, especially if the homeowners are not too handy with a brush and a roller, and have plans to sell in the near future.

Installing home features that are “committed”

Committed is a phrase that is used to describe semi-permanent aesthetic commitments that homeowners often make that are specifically tailored to their own personal tastes.

In other words, if a homeowner decided to install pink carpeting or pink granite countertops, then they are committed to staying in their home for a while or will have to spend more money reversing the change before a home sale can be made. A committed choice may not reduce the sale value of a house, but it often makes it harder to sell.
